Automotive Care Products Case Study: Wash Chain Label

A car wash chain was selling its rivals' chemistry from its own shelves. Every site bought from local distributors at retail prices, so margins were thin and customers could not tell one location from another. We developed six automotive care products under the chain's own brand. The first year shipped about 46,000 cans, and cost per wash fell across the network.

The Problem: Buying Your Own Brand From Someone Else

A wash chain that buys chemistry at retail has three problems that no amount of staff training will fix.

The first is margin. Detergent, degreaser and interior cleaner are consumed on every wash, so they are the largest recurring cost in the bay after labour and water. Buying them through distributors leaves the supplier's margin in the invoice.

The second is consistency. Two sites running two brands of foam cleaner behave differently on the same vehicle, and customers notice. A shared brand fixes that, because the formula behind it is the same everywhere.

The third is identity. The chain wanted its own name on the can, its own application guidance and its own dilution ratio, because a network that dilutes differently at each site is paying for concentrate it never uses.

Two practical constraints came with the brief. The range had to cover interiors, engines and paint without needing a distributor's catalogue, and the paperwork had to be complete for a network that crosses borders inside one country.

Why We Chose a Formulation Factory Over Third-Party Labels

Three options were considered.

Keep buying through distributors and apply a brand sticker. Excluded. A sticker does not change the formula, the dilution ratio or the margin, and it looks like what it is.

Buy from a local blender in the same market. Excluded. It solved freight but not cost at scale, and the blender could not offer the aerosol format the interior products needed.

One formulation and filling factory. Selected. Aerosols and liquids come from the same plant, with one quality file, one label set and one delivery schedule.

The Range We Manufactured

The opening range was built around how the chain actually cleans a car, not around a product catalogue.

For interiors we supplied a universal foam cleaner in the brush and brushless formats. The brush version lifts dust from fabric and vents in one pass, which is what an interior detail bay needs, and the brushless version covers the areas where a brush would pull a thread. The engine degreaser range covers the engine bay, including the external engine cleaning step that removes road film before a degreaser goes on.

For finishing, we supplied a dashboard dressing wax and a multi-purpose body cleaner. Two more SKUs, an adhesive remover for sticker residue on glass and a multi-purpose anti-rust lubricant for hinges and latches, filled the gaps that usually drive a branch manager back to a store.

Production runs on our own line at the Zengcheng Licheng plant in Guangzhou. The automatic BOV aerosol filling line handles the pressurised products, and the PLC controlled reactors with the mixing, emulsifying and filtering systems handle the liquids, so the formula that is approved is the formula that ships.

Installation: How the Work Ran

Nothing is installed on a car forever, but the application method is part of the product, and we treated it that way.

We started with the dilution protocol. The chain's own managers set a working strength for each liquid product against real vehicles, and we printed that ratio on the label, in the chain's own wording. That single step removed the biggest source of waste in the network, because every site now mixes the same product the same way.

Then came the launch pack. Labels went to print in the chain's brand, with the application steps, the dilution table, the storage instruction and the hazard and safety information the destination market requires, and every product shipped with its safety data sheet on file at the chain's head office. Our MSDS and compliance notes page covers how that file is assembled.

Testing and Quality Control

Every batch is checked against the approved formula before filling. That covers viscosity and density for liquids, fill weight and pressure for aerosols, spray pattern and valve function, and the pH window that keeps a cleaner aggressive enough to work and gentle enough for interiors.

Packaging is verified with the product: batch code, barcode, label position and artwork revision.

Two further checks close the file. A stability check holds samples from each batch under temperature cycling to confirm the shelf life target, and an independent laboratory verifies the formulation. Parts of our range carry recognised environmental certification, which several of the chain's own commercial customers ask about.

Results: What the Numbers Show

Six products are now on the shelves under the chain's own brand, and about 46,000 cans shipped in the first year across three deliveries. Cost per wash fell at every site, first because the chain stopped paying distributor margin and then because the printed dilution ratio stopped the over-strength mixing.

Consistency improved in a way that shows on the shop floor. An interior clean looks the same at every branch, which the chain now uses in its own marketing. Branches also stopped ordering single cases from local stores, so stock holding moved to the central warehouse where it can be planned.

What This Case Means for Your Project

If you wash cars at volume, the chemistry is a brand decision and a cost decision at the same time. Own the formula, own the label and print the dilution ratio on the can.

We formulate, fill and pack car care chemistry in Guangzhou, including aerosols, and we supply OEM, ODM and private label ranges to distributors, detailers and chains. Send us your product list, your volumes and your brand files, and contact the factory for a formulation and quotation.
